What an incredible place. Rhodes offers almost any kind of holiday you could want. If you want peace and quiet, youíll find it on Rhodes. If you want activities and night-life, Rhodes has got it. If you want to explore history and culture, that is there too. The island is clean, the locals are very warm and friendly to tourists. English is spoken everywhere and most signs are in English too.

History of Rhodes

Prehistoric Period
5000 BC:
Neolithic settlements on island.
1700 BC: Settlement of Minoans.
1500 BC: Mycenaean domination of island.

Ancient Period
7th cent BC: Rhodes joins the Doric Hexapolis.
6th cent. BC: The three cities of Rhodes mint their own coins.
491 BC: Siege of Lindos by Datis, the general of the Persian King Darius.
480 BC: The Rhodians take part in the naval battle of Salamina, on the side of the Persians.
478 BC: Rhodes joins the Athenian League.
408 BC: Foundation of the city of Rhodes.
305 BC: Siege of city of Rhodes by Demetrius Poliorketes (Besieger).
226 BC: The Colossus of Rhodes is demolished by an earthquake.
42 BC: The island is plundered by the Roman general Cassius.
58 AD: Saint Paul brings Christianity to the island
297 AD: The island of Rhodes becomes part of the Island Province of the Roman Empire.

Byzantine Period
395 AD:
Byzantine Empire period begins for Rhodes.
654 AD:
Occupation of the city of Rhodes by the Arab Moawiyah.
11th cent.: Byzantium concedes commercial privileges to the Venetians.
1204-40:The island is ruled by the Gavalas family from Byzantium.
1261: The Byzantines concede the island as a fiefdom to various Genovese nobles. 

Medieval period
The Genovese concede Rhodes, Kos and Leros to the Order of the Knights of St. John.
1309: Rhodes is ruled by the Order of Knights.
1480: First siege of city of Rhodes by Ottomans.
1481: Catastrophic earthquake.
1498: An epidemic of deadly plague strikes the city of Rhodes.

Ottoman Period
Siege and capture of Rhodes by Suleiman I the Magnificent.
1522-1912: Rhodes is part of the Ottoman Empire.

Modern Times
1912-1945: Period of Italian rule.
1945-1947: Rhodes under British administration.
1947: Union with Greece.
1981: Greece becomes the tenth member of the European Union.
2001: Greece joins the Monetary Union.
2007: Rhodes Hosts of the Islands games.
2008: Rhodes City Celebrates it's 2400th anniversary.
